Is the DVLA Register of Number Plate Suppliers Really Working ?

Since 1 January 2003 all number plate suppliers in England and Wales have been required by law to register their details with DVLA.The Register was introduced in January 2003 to make it more difficult for thieves who put fake number plates on stolen vehicles to make them appear legitimate. It is now more difficult for criminals and penalty evaders to get number plates because they need to provide proof that they are entitled to them, supported by personal identification.Legitimate private number plates, Personalised number plates and cherished number dealers also have to comply with the DVLA number plate suppliers regulation. Currently the scheme does not extend to Scotland & Northern Ireland however parliament are to review this on 1st August this year. The recent article below brings in to question the real effect of the regulation in preventing criminals obtaining number plates. Number Plate Theft on the increaseThieves are cashing in on the fuel crisis by stealing car number plates so they can make off with petrol from forecourts. They then either use the petrol themselves or siphon it off to sell. A police spokesman said: "Most garages have CCTV to record car number plates at pumps. Thieves know we can't trace them if they use stolen plates." One victim of plate theft is Hampshire car salesman Malcolm Mathews. The 65-year-old from Chandler's Ford said: "When they took just my plate it never occurred to me that they would use it for stealing fuel." The theft of Mathews' licence plate from a busy area in the middle of the day has prompted police to urge motorists to be extra vigilant.
